My House Catches

on Fire

by Scott Boden

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Marion, OH BP
My house catches on fire, and according to the fire department, I had a short in the wiring around my furnace. Our house guest has told us that she had smelled smoke a couple of times but I never smelled it. The picture above shows some burnt wires believed to have caused the fire.
And true to our luck, the rooms that were hurt the most of course were the rooms that we had remodeled. One room on the top floor took us nine months to finish. We gutted the whole room, dry walled, wired, papered, everything one could do to a room. And it is wasted.
The room directly below that is another bedroom we just finished remodeling last year. It is wasted as well.
Four rooms will need gutted, including the floors to the joists and to ceilings joists, and it will take a few months before we can live in it again.
Robyn and I have put a lot of work into this house over the years and the we still had a ways to go.
But no one got hurt, and some people walking seen the smoke and woke me up. One man was kicking my doors which is what woke me up, so I looked on our monitor to see who was at the door and why the pounding was so hard. I know it only took a few seconds but I then smelled smoke.
I opened my bedroom door and our house was filled with smoke and I made my way down stairs and out the door.
I don't remember what happened in what order after that, but the fire department was on top of everything pretty quick and as I watched my windows being broken out, It had hit me as to what was happening to my home. It is a sickening feeling to watch a thing like this.
There is so much to do and where to start in unknown. Thank you Marion Fire Department and to the folks who woke me up.
Why is all of this going unnoticed by the media????
They send 1000 reporters to Alaska to dig up something on Sarah palin and they have this right in front of their eyes!
From Dreams of My Father:'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'
 From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'
 From Dreams of My Father:'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'
 From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'
 From Dreams of My Father:'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'
And FINALLY the Most Damning one of ALL of them!!!
From Audacity of Hope:'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'
Check your troubles at the Shore!
by Laurie
***********************************
The weekend started out with a drive to Port Clinton to catch the Miller Ferry. We were going to Put In Bay!
We arrived just as the 2nd to last boat of the evening was about to depart! Something about Put In Bay that just grabs me up and gets me excited! The three hour drive was torture.. "Are we almost there?" "Are we almost there?" Finally we pulled up to the Miller Ferry drop off area and Julio drops me so that I can get our tickets to cross the lake.
I swear, right beside the ticket booth there is a proverbial booth that says "Drop your troubles and worries here!" They box them up for you, knowing full well that when you return at the end of the weekend you will not be back to get them! So I got out the tree that needs to be cut down, my squeaky breaks, the client that is "on the fence" and for good measure, I threw in the entire Media Version of the Real Estate market and we were on our way to THE BAY!
The ride was beautiful! We were on the 6:30 boat and the water was calm and relaxing. Ahhhh! Now I have been to Put In Bay on many occasions, but this trip was particularly exciting for me because my husband had never checked out of everyday life the way you can just going a couple of miles away from the shore from Port Clinton.
On The Miller Ferry, there are a lot of people. These people have the exact same goal in mind as you do. Everyone is pulling or carrying their bags for the weekend and has their coolers. We had ours packed as well. The boat sounded it's horn to depart and you hear the synchronized sound of beers opening all around you and what sounds like a well rehearsed 'AHHHHH"! My Bud light was so cold and refreshing, however, Julio's Heineken was just looking at him wishing he had a bottle opener! I asked the couple next to us if they had one, they did not. But don't worry! It was like a lobbyist group on a mission... like a game of telephone, everyone concerned for Julio's ability to drink his beer on the short ride to the Bay! Finally out of the crowd, a couple of groups back came a man who had figured out how to open a beer with a key and POOF.. another synchronized AHHHH! Now I have heard of masterminding something with a group of people all on the same mission, but this was special and just the beginning of a weekend in Paradise!
  After we arrived at the dock at the Bay, we took a cab 3 miles to our hotel which was right in the center of it all, downtown! We stayed at the Park Hotel. This is a hotel that was built in the early 1800's and is maintained with all the amenities of the 1800's! We had a room with a bed, decorated with wallpaper and carpet of it's time. There were 12 rooms and 2 bathrooms, a Men's and a Women's, each with 3 stalls and 3 showers! Perfect, because we only needed one of each!
Now I have to mention that Put In Bay is an expensive place, but we had a plan! This hotel was right beside the most popular bar on the island, The Round House. There they have great bands, lots of people and $5 beers!  We took a quick walk around the island, stopped at the general store for a couple 6-packs and came back to the hotel. We sat outside of our hotel with perfect weather, sipped our beer and listened to the band while watching all the happy people walking from bar to bar! Eventually we went into the bar to dance and mingle! We stayed for a bit then went to a couple of other bars on the street, then walked back to our hotel where we stepped back in time, walked up the open stairway with the plush red carpet and Victorian feel to our 1800's chamber! Night Night!
We awoke in the morning after sleeping like babies! Anticipating a great day ahead, we enjoyed breakfast, then rented a golf cart! Touring the island on this sunny, 75 degree day was as relaxing as an all day full body massage! We were in the country where there are wineries and caves, lots of things to do and see and a beautiful view of the lake no matter where you turn. We stopped at the Butterfly House, where you go in this big butterfly ecosystem and there are hundreds of butterflies! It was mesmerizing! The colorful creatures would just land right on you and you could watch them playing follow the leader with each other.
After all that, a nap is required then a great evening starting with the best food on the Island. Boardwalk. There they have the best crab legs I have ever tasted and for good measure you have to get a bowl of lobster bisque! MMMM
We ended the day on the porch of the hotel, sipping yet more beer from the general store and having great conversation while watching the people who were seemingly more intoxicated than the previous night. Funny, it was like Drunks helping Drunks that night, still everyone on the same mission! Now if that's not entertaining, I am at a loss for what is!  We once again turned in to our Victorian Chamber, awoke in the morning to have a great breakfast and return to Earth! Only Earth had changed! We grabbed the boat back to Port Clinton. Now the passengers were different, all calm and refreshed or severely hung over. Either way our trip was more than a success. We set out to have a wonderful time and we did, in fact, have a wonderful time!
We docked in Port Clinton and it was bitter sweet! The weekend was over, but we were taking with us the vivid memories to last a lifetime! On the drive home we remembered that we forgot to pick up our troubles, then we realized that there weren't any to pick up!
